Pre-Schools
Traditionally called Balwadis pre-schools are a key component of Pratham’s overall strategy for universalizing primary education. An exposure to early childhood education leads to higher enrollment and attendance in primary school, and better academic performance in subsequent years. They target 3-5 year old children.
The Pre-School Model
- 20 children in each class
- Teacher is a young woman from the local community with a 10th grade education
- Easily accessible to children and thus located in municipal schools, community spaces, teachers' homes or places of worship
- Pratham pays no rent for space, but provides basic training and material
